Fallen Leaves on Auckland Lawns: Clearing and Mowing Guide

Fallen leaves are a normal part of a garden, but a lawn needs attention when they collect into a heavy blanket. Look at the amount, the condition of the grass underneath and where the leaves will go after clearing. A good tidy-up considers the lawn and its surroundings together.

Assess the cover before planning the mow

A few loose leaves are different from a wet mat that hides the grass. Dense cover shades the lawn and can make it difficult to see the ground or objects underneath. Check the areas beside fences and under trees as well as the open centre of the lawn.

If leaves have been gathering for a while, show the extent in a quote enquiry. Mention whether the lawn below is long, soft or difficult to access. A photograph taken from the path can help explain the job without walking through a heavy covering.

  • Is the grass still visible, or is it covered by a continuous layer?

  • Are the leaves loose and dry, or stuck together in a heavy mat?

  • Are twigs, loose objects or other debris mixed into the area?

  • Are nearby paths and steps also affected?

  • Where could the gathered leaves be stored, processed or taken?

Keep mowing conditions in the decision

Clearing the surface does not automatically mean the ground is ready for a mower. If the lawn is soft, slippery or waterlogged, assess that separately. Avoid expecting a neat short cut simply because the leaves have been shifted.

Our guide to mowing wet grass in Auckland explains the checks after rain. When requesting a combined tidy-up and mow, describe both the leaf cover and the lawn's condition.

Consider a useful destination for collected leaves

Where suitable space is available, collected leaves can be used to make leafmould. The Royal Horticultural Society's leafmould guide explains how leaves break down into a soil conditioner, with different leaf types taking different amounts of time.

The RHS also describes collecting leaves from a lawn with a rotary mower to shred them for the leafmould pile. That is an option to assess with appropriate equipment and suitable ground conditions. It does not mean every leaf-covered lawn should immediately be mown.

If you want material retained at the property, agree on a destination that does not obstruct access or leave it piled over the lawn you have just cleared. If removal is wanted, make that requirement clear before accepting a quote.

Confirm what a leaf tidy-up includes

Blowing material away from a path, gathering it into a pile and removing it from a property are different tasks. A clear quote should identify the areas being treated and the agreed destination for the material. Explain if the priority is the lawn, hard surfaces or both.

Frasers Mowing's core mowing service includes mulch mowing, line trimming and blow-down of affected hard surfaces. Discuss substantial leaf cover or additional collection requirements when enquiring so the scope can be assessed. Our mulch-mowing guide separately explains what happens to grass clippings.
