First Mow After Overseeding: An Auckland Lawn Guide

The first mow after overseeding should follow the new grass's development, not just the usual mowing date. Seeing green shoots is encouraging, but germination and readiness for mowing are different stages. The seed mix, growing conditions and the aftercare agreed for the job all affect the decision.

Start with the seed and aftercare instructions

Keep a record of what was sown and when. Check the guidance for that seed mix and ask the person who carried out the work how the first cut should be assessed. A suggested date is a point to review progress, rather than proof that every part of the lawn will be ready.

Yates New Zealand's guide to establishing a lawn from seed recommends allowing establishment before the first mow, starting with a high setting and reducing the height gradually over later cuts. The target for your lawn still needs to suit the grass and its condition.

Assess the new growth and the ground together

Look across the whole area. A sunny patch and a shaded section can develop differently. Point out uneven establishment, bare areas or places that have stayed very wet. Do not judge the entire job from the tallest existing grass or the strongest patch of seedlings.

Before arranging the first cut, prepare these details:

  • The sowing date and the seed mix, if known.

  • The current growth across the repaired sections.

  • Any seed-specific first-mowing instructions.

  • Areas where the soil remains soft or access is difficult.

  • Whether the lawn also contains older grass that is ready for maintenance.

The surface and ground must also be suitable for mowing. A lawn can have enough visible growth while still being too soft or wet for a useful cut. Our wet-grass mowing guide explains those separate checks.

Keep the first cut modest

Use a sharp blade and take a small amount of growth rather than trying to reach the final maintenance height immediately. Yates' mowing advice supports a high first setting and the general rule of removing no more than one-third of the leaf in a cut.

If the ground marks, the grass tears or the result is unsuitable, stop and reassess the conditions and equipment. The aim is to begin maintenance while protecting establishing grass, rather than making the lawn look short as quickly as possible.

Overseeding can leave two mowing needs on one lawn

Older turf may be growing strongly while the new patches still need establishment care. Tell your mowing provider exactly which areas were seeded. Discuss how the sections should be managed instead of assuming that one date and one setting will suit everything.

Coordinate watering and mowing through that transition. Our new-seed and established-lawn watering guide explains why the routine changes as grass establishes.

Confirm the first visit and follow-up

If overseeding is being quoted, ask whether the first mow and any follow-up visits are included. If you are requesting mowing after someone else seeded the lawn, provide the date, seed details and aftercare instructions when enquiring.
