Start with the reason the lawn is thin
Check mowing, grass type, shade, wear, drainage and soil condition before adding seed or fertiliser. Oversowing the same failed patch repeatedly may not help if the growing conditions remain unsuitable. Tell us about previous weed treatments and fertiliser applications so these can be considered when planning the work.
Overseeding, feeding or renovation: which is appropriate?
Thin grass with useful turf remaining: overseeding may improve coverage after suitable preparation.
Established grass that needs nutrients: an appropriate fertilising plan may help existing plants. Fertiliser does not add new grass plants.
A few bare or worn patches: targeted repairs may be enough instead of treating the whole lawn.
Extensive weeds, bare ground or poor growing conditions: request a broader renovation assessment. Aeration and scarifying address different problems and should be specified only where appropriate; they are not automatically included.

How can I keep an overseeding project within budget?
Share your priorities and budget when requesting a quote. Ask whether repairing particular thin areas is suitable or whether the whole lawn needs work. A staged repair may be an option, but the scope should still address why the grass has thinned. The lowest headline price is not necessarily the same service.
Compare quotes for the same measured area and ask them to identify preparation, seed, fertiliser if needed, application, follow-up visits and aftercare. Confirm who will water the new seed and whether follow-up mowing is included or charged separately. This makes the total commitment clearer.
Preparation and aftercare for new grass
Preparation should allow seed to contact suitable soil. For small bare patches, this commonly includes clearing unwanted plants and debris and loosening the surface. Choose seed suited to the site and follow the seed directions. Keep newly sown areas moist during establishment and minimise foot and pet traffic until the grass is established.
New seed needs different watering from an established lawn. Follow the agreed aftercare and adjust for rainfall and the site. Resume mowing when the new grass is sufficiently established, following the seed and aftercare guidance. A fixed mowing date or a guaranteed transformation time will not suit every lawn.
Maintaining a thicker lawn
Use a mowing height suited to the grass and conditions, avoid scalping and adjust the interval to actual growth. Aim to remove no more than one-third of the blade in one cut. Feed according to the lawn’s needs and the product directions, rather than applying more fertiliser simply because the lawn looks thin.
